About
My research interests are primarily in Fat Studies, critical medical studies, public health discourse, obesity panic, appearance and embodiment. I am currently working on a critical examination of the discursive construction of bariatric surgery in the context of the alleged 'obesity epidemic', and the lived experiences of post-operative bariatric patients.
I am the author of "The ‘Fat’ Female Body" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), and the forthcoming "Fat Panic and Disciplined Embodiment: ‘Health’ and Bodily Aesthetics in the Management of 'Obesity'" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013). I also co-edited "Somatechnics: Queering the Technologisation of Bodies" (Ashgate: 2009), and have published numerous articles and chapters on embodiment and the discursive constructions of normalcy and pathology. I am co-Chief Editor of the new journal "Somatechnics" published twice annually (May and September) with Edinburgh University Press.
