About
I hold Bachelor’s degrees in both Biotechnology and Biochemistry (Saxion Hogeschool, The Netherlands, 2005) and a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (University of Twente, The Netherlands, 2009). My Master’s thesis on the functional, epistemological and phenomenological relationship between brain-computer interfaces and their users was supervised by philosophers Prof. Philip Brey and Dr. Johnny Søraker and computer scientist Prof. Anton Nijholt. It has received an ‘A’ mark and has been published online by the '3TU. Centre for Ethics and Technology' in their Master Theses Series. After my graduation I worked as a (1) teaching and research-assistant at the philosophy department of the University of Twente, (2) researcher in computer ethics at the philosophy department of the Technical University of Delft, and (3) assistant editor of the journal 'Ethics and Information Technology' (Springer).
Currently, I am working on a PhD project in which I try to better understand our relationship to cognitive artifacts (i.e. artifacts with representational functions). My thesis has three parts: (1) developing a function theory of cognitive artifacts, (2) developing a multidimensional matrix to conceptualize different kinds of epistemic interactions and coupling between humans and cognitive artifacts, and (3) applying the matrix to specific cases (most likely cases of human-computer interaction).
