About

I am a Professor of Philosophy at Macquarie University in Sydney. I have been Head of the Department of Philosophy at Macquarie since 2008 and will continue in that role until July 2012.

I was a Mercator Gastprofessur at Goethe Universitaet Frankfurt during the winter semester of 2010/11 and I have an affiliation with Queen's University Belfast as a Visiting Research Fellow.

My field of research is hermeneutics and critical theory. Currently I'm finishing a co-edited book with Shane O'Neill on recognition theory as a research program for the social sciences and I'm working with Jean-Philippe Deranty, Emmanuel Renault and Christophe Dejours on a project investigating the formative significance of work for selfhood, society and politics. The perspective we take, and the sources we draw on, can be gleaned from our recently published book New Philosophies of Labour (Brill 2012).

I see my research on recognition and work as fitting in the hermeneutic tradition and thus as connecting with the hermeneutic conception of experience advanced by Gadamer, Ricoeur, Taylor, McDowell and others. I'm in the process of figuring out how.
