About
I hold an MPhil from the University of Edinburgh where I have been supervised by Andy Clark, Julian Kiverstein and Tillman Vierkant. I am currently a PhD Candidate at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders (CCD) under John Sutton, Richard Menary and Max Coltheart. I am also visiting PhD Student at ILLC Amsterdam (under Julian Kiverstein) at the University of Sydney (under Paul Griffiths and Karola Stotz) and at ANU (under David Chalmers). My research is concerned with so-called second wave extended mind theories, which I defend based on empirical evidence drawn from developmental neuroscience and Developmental Systems Theory in evolutionary biology.
AREAS OF RESEARCH: 1)Extended Mind; 2)Enactivism; 3)Externalism/Internalism; 4)Neural Plasticity; 5)Embodiment; 6)Sensory Substitution; 7)Cross-modal Neuromodulation; 8)Cognitive Extension;9) Augmented Cognition;10) Dominance & Deference Theories;11) Artificial Synaesthesia; 12)Consciousness; 13) Neuroconstructivism; 14) Neural-Darwinism; 15) Developmental Systems Theory; 16) Dynamical Systems Theory; 17) Individuation of Senses; 18) Extended Consciousness; 19) Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience; 20) Fundamentals of Body Representation; 21) NeuroPhilosophy; 22) Cognitive Ethnography; 23) Neuroanthropology
I am currently working on:
Articles in Refereed Journals/ Book Chapters
1) Kiverstein J., Farina, M. & Clark, A. (forthcoming): "The Extended Mind", to appear in the Oxford Bibliographies Online.
2) A chapter (forthcoming) on Sensory Substitution with Prof. Andy Clark & Prof. Julian Kiverstein. It will appear in the Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Perception 2012. The book is edited by Prof. Mohan Matthen.
3) a literature survey on Cultural Neuroscience. (Invited by Dr. Leslie Marsh). It will appear in Cognitive Systems Research.
In Preparation
4) A co-authored paper with Prof. John Sutton on the relation between Extended Cognition and the Standard Social Science Model.
5) A co-authored paper with Prof. Julian Kiverstein on Incorporation and the Extended Mind Thesis
6) A co-authored paper with Prof. Julian Kiverstein and Dr. Malika Auvray on Sensory Substitution and Synaesthesia
